What Is Creatine? 

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound made in the liver and kidneys, and stored primarily in muscle and, in smaller amounts, the brain. Its core job is helping regenerate ATP, the cellular energy currency your body relies on to make energy. Any tissue with high energy demands, including the brain also depends on creatine. This overlap is where a lot of the newer research is focused. 

Creatine Benefits For Brain Health: 

The idea that creatine could support cognitive function isn’t new, but the evidence has matured considerably in the past couple of years. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that creatine supplementation may benefit certain aspects of cognitive performance in adults, particularly memory, attention-task completion time and information-processing speed, although it did not significantly improve overall cognitive function.

Where the picture gets more interesting is in older adults and clinical populations. A systematic review focused specifically on aging found that the majority of included studies reported a positive relationship between creatine and cognition, particularly around memory and attention. And in a small pilot trial in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, eight weeks of high-dose creatine supplementation was associated with improvements in cognition and a measurable increase in brain creatine concentrations. This is a promising result, not only for those living with conditions like Alzheimer’s, but also for those hoping to prevent it. 

Brain-related benefits are biologically plausible and increasingly well studied, but this is still an emerging area, and not a ‘creatine will fix all’ clinical recommendation. 

Creatine for Women Over 50: Muscle and Bone Health

Menopause is associated with a well-documented decline in both muscle mass and bone density, largely due to falling oestrogen levels. These changes can increase the risk of frailty, falls, fractures, and reduced quality of life over time. Creatine has emerged as a simple, well-researched and relatively low-cost intervention that may help offset some of these changes. 

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in postmenopausal women found that creatine supplementation, particularly at doses of 5g per day or more, when combined with resistance training resulted in meaningful improvements in lean muscle mass and strength. In contrast, studies using 3 grams per day or less without resistance training found little to no benefit, suggesting that both an adequate dose and regular strength training are important for achieving the greatest effects. 

Beyond muscle, emerging research suggests creatine may also support bone health. By improving muscle strength, creatine increases the mechanical loading placed on bones, a key stimulus for maintaining bone density. Some evidence also indicates it may help reduce bone resorption (bone breakdown), which could contribute to preserving bone mineral density over time.

Creatine’s reputation is undergoing a genuine transformation, and it’s about time. Once boxed in as a muscle supplement for gym-goers, it’s now emerging as one of the most versatile, well-studied, and safety-proven compounds in the supplement world, with plausible and increasingly well-supported roles in brain health and musculoskeletal aging. 

Several populations now have real, evidence-backed reasons to bring creatine into clinical conversations, particularly: 

● Older adults concerned about cognitive decline, where research increasingly suggests creatine can support brain health and function, offering a simple, low-risk addition to a healthy aging strategy. 

● Postmenopausal women working to preserve muscle mass and bone density, a group especially vulnerable to the osteoporosis and sarcopenia that accelerates after oestrogen decline, and one where creatine may offer meaningful protective benefit. 

Beyond these core areas, some of the more remarkable emerging applications include creatine’s potential role in supporting mood and depression, weight-loss, energy production, aiding concussion and traumatic brain injury recovery, and even easing jet lag and sleep deprivation. 

Creatine has graduated from a niche performance supplement to a compound that deserves a place in mainstream conversations about healthy aging, cognitive resilience and long term wellbeing. Few supplements come close to offering this much benefit from one naturally occurring compound.
