DUTCH Test

The DUTCH Test is a comprehensive advanced hormone test that maps how your body produces, metabolises and clears hormones - and how your stress system is functioning across the day.

What Is The DUTCH Test?

The DUTCH test is a comprehensive hormone assessment using dried urine samples collected at specific times over a 24-hour period. It stands for Dried Hormone Test for Comprehensive Hormones and it allows us to evaluate:

  • Reproductive hormones
  • Hormone metabolites (how hormones are processed)
  • Adrenal function and cortisol rhythm
  • Androgen balance
  • Melatonin
  • Key organic acid markers related to neurotransmitters and detoxification

It provides significantly more insight than a single blood hormone measurement.

At Perpetual Wellbeing, we use the DUTCH Hormone test when we need a deeper, more functional understanding of hormone balance. This is not just a “hormone level” test. It maps how your body produces, metabolises and clears hormones - and how your stress system is functioning across the day. Functional testing provides insight - not a diagnosis on its own. Interpretation in context is key.

Who Is The DUTCH Test Most Helpful For?

For patients who feel unheard, dismissed, or told everything is “normal,” this testing often provides clarity and validation. The DUTCH Hormone Test may be considered when someone is experiencing:

  • PMS, PMDD or irregular cycles
  • Perimenopause or menopause symptoms
  • Fertility challenges
  • Hormonal acne or hair loss
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Anxiety with hormonal patterns
  • Sleep disruption
  • Post-oral contraceptive hormone dysregulation
  • Metabolic resistance or weight plateau

What Does The DUTCH Test Examine?

What This Test Does NOT Do

This test:

  • Does not diagnose disease on its own
  • Does not replace conventional pathology
  • Is not ordered routinely “just in case”

I always ask: Will this result change the treatment plan? If the answer is yes, then it’s a powerful tool.

How We Use The Results

At Perpetual Wellbeing, we don’t treat lab numbers. We interpret results within:

  • Your symptoms
  • Your medical history
  • Your current medications
  • Your stress load
  • Your nutrient status
  • Your gut and metabolic function

Because hormones are messengers. If they’re dysregulated, something upstream is driving it.

And our job is to find that upstream driver, the underlying cause.

Book An Appointment

If you’re wondering whether Dried Urine Hormone Testing is appropriate for you, the first step is a comprehensive consultation.
We assess your history, current labs, symptoms, and goals - then decide together whether testing will provide meaningful direction.

This test is also available as part of a testing guidance consultation – if you prefer to get the testing done, and then come in later for interpretation.

FAQs About The Dutch Test

The DUTCH test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) is an advanced hormone assessment that uses dried urine samples collected at home over a 24-hour period. It provides a detailed view of sex hormones, adrenal hormones and their metabolites, rather than a single point-in-time reading, to help identify patterns and imbalances that may be contributing to symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, PMS, perimenopausal symptoms and low mood.

Yes. The DUTCH hormone test is available in Australia through qualified health practitioners, including naturopaths and integrative clinicians. At Perpetual Wellbeing, your practitioner can arrange a DUTCH test kit for you, which is completed at home and returned to the laboratory for analysis, with a follow-up consultation booked to discuss your results and treatment options.

The DUTCH test provides a comprehensive picture of hormone production, metabolism and clearance. It typically reports on oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, adrenal hormones such as cortisol and DHEA, the daily cortisol rhythm, and how your body is breaking down and eliminating these hormones. This information can help explain symptoms related to stress, energy, menstrual cycles, perimenopause, sleep, weight changes and mood, and guide a targeted treatment plan.

The timing of a DUTCH test depends on your sex, life stage and the type of panel ordered. For women with regular menstrual cycles, collection is usually recommended during the mid luteal phase, around five to seven days after ovulation (for example, days 19 to 22 of a typical 28-day cycle), so that both oestrogen and progesterone can be accurately assessed. For women who are post-menopausal, not cycling or who have had a hysterectomy, and for men, samples can generally be collected on any convenient day after discussion with the ordering practitioner.

The DUTCH test is completed at home using a kit supplied by your practitioner. You collect several small urine samples on filter paper strips at specific times over a 24-hour period, allow them to dry, then return the samples to the laboratory in the prepaid envelope provided. Clear written instructions are included with the kit and your practitioner will advise you about any medications, supplements or foods that may need to be paused or limited before testing.

Your DUTCH test results are sent directly to the practitioner who ordered the test. Once the laboratory has completed the analysis, your practitioner will arrange a follow-up consultation to explain the report in detail, relate the findings to your symptoms and overall health picture, and outline any recommended treatment or further testing. You can usually request a copy of your DUTCH report for your own records.
