What Is IgG Allergy Testing Used For?
An IgG reaction can occur hours to days after exposure to the allergen; food or inhalant. This type of reaction is referred to as a delayed sensitivity reaction and is different to an IgE reaction, which occurs about the time immediately after exposure to the allergen; food or inhalant.
Representing approximately 75% of serum immunoglobulins in humans, IgG is the most abundant antibody found in the circulation and are found in all body fluids. IgG molecules are synthesized and secreted by plasma B cells. IgG antibodies are very important in fighting bacterial and viral infections. IgG antibodies are the only type of antibody that can cross the placenta in a pregnant woman to help protect her baby (fetus).
The IgG Food Sensitivity Test
The IgG test will not identify acute immediate food allergies (IgE). If you have immediate or IgE mediated food allergies please continue to avoid these items even if they do not appear on your list of foods to avoid. It is recommended that IgG allergy testing is only performed for infants greater than 18 months of age.
Food sensitivities can cause a wide range of symptoms and disorders. The foods that cause these delayed reactions are often hard to diagnose because of the time between consumption and the physical reaction. The IgG food sensitivity test offers a useful tool for detecting the foods causing this response. The results are patient specific and provide an easy, precise and effective starting point for dietary manipulation.

FAQs About IgG Food Intolerance Tests
IgG food allergy testing measures the levels of Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in your blood in response to specific foods. Elevated IgG antibodies can indicate that your body is reacting to certain foods, which may contribute to symptoms such as bloating, fatigue, headaches, skin issues, or digestive discomfort. The test helps identify potential food sensitivities and can be a valuable tool in managing diet-related symptoms.
IgG and IgE tests measure different types of immune responses. IgE testing identifies immediate allergic reactions that occur minutes after consuming or being exposed to an allergen, often resulting in symptoms such as hives, swelling, or anaphylaxis. IgG testing, on the other hand, detects delayed food sensitivities that may take hours or even days to cause symptoms. These reactions are typically milder but can still impact long-term wellbeing.
IgG testing is a useful tool for identifying potential food sensitivities, but results should be interpreted in conjunction with your symptoms and medical history. The presence of IgG antibodies indicates exposure to a food, not necessarily a harmful reaction. For this reason, it is recommended to work with a qualified health practitioner, such as a naturopath, to interpret your results and develop a personalised dietary plan.
At Perpetual Wellbeing, we offer comprehensive IgG food sensitivity testing through a simple blood test. After booking a consultation, your practitioner will arrange for the sample to be collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis. Once the results are ready, your practitioner will review the findings with you and help create a tailored plan to support your digestive and overall health.
We offer tests that cover 96, 144 or 240 food analytes. These cost $296, $380 and $575 respectively. In addition we offer testing guidance consultations which cost $60 to help you choose the tests most appropriate for you.
